Check out the Auro maize plantation, which is grown by Auro students. After harvest, our husking and milling machines grind the maize cobs to maize flour (the waste product is also used up in animal feed!). The school cooks then use this flour to make “posho” (ugali / polenta) which is used for the daily student meals! As the school grows its own produce, the cost of providing meals is lower. In addition, the milling machines are also used by local farmers to mill their sorghum, posho and other produce, generating revenues for the school in the process! And the students learn about better farming methods in the process…. It’s a win, win and win. One Cause director Rajen enjoyed a hearty meal of our Auro grown posho, beans and a naughty queen cake with all the students yesterday!
